People return to Essaouira for its light, for a walk, for the particular ease with which a day unfolds. Over time, that attachment can become something more: a home to return to, familiar routines, a place in the city’s life. Plans for transport, tourism and economic activity now invite a longer view. They offer an interesting perspective both to people who already love Essaouira and to those discovering it. Understanding that perspective means looking carefully at what exists, what has been announced and what still needs to take shape.
Rail offers a new connection to consider
The decree dated 1 September 2026, published in the Official Bulletin on 7 September, declares the Marrakech–Agadir and Chichaoua–Essaouira railway projects to be of public utility. This gives the proposed Essaouira connection an official framework. It does not confirm the start of construction, an opening date or a journey time.
It is a prospect worth following: if delivered, the connection could change how people reach the city and plan regular stays. For now, it remains part of the project’s future horizon.

Safi–Essaouira: a coastal motorway under study
In an interview published on 27 March 2025, Essaouira’s mayor said that a study had been launched for a motorway linking Safi and Essaouira. The announcement concerns a study; this source establishes neither the start of construction nor an opening date.
For people who regularly travel along the coast, the idea is an interesting one. Its effect on any particular address will depend on the decisions taken and the project’s eventual delivery.

Mogador resort: renewed tourism ambitions
An agreement to revive and develop the Mogador tourism resort was signed on 19 December 2024. The government portal subsequently confirmed the announced resort investments in January 2025. These developments demonstrate an ambition to grow; they do not establish that the proposed facilities have been completed.
What matters next is how that ambition takes shape. The places that actually open, their relationship with the landscape and the experience they offer will tell us more than a promise on paper.

Golf is already part of the experience
Golf de Mogador already exists and is listed in the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation’s official directory. It belongs to Essaouira’s current offer, independently of the future facilities announced for the resort.
If golf matters to your plans, give it a proper place when exploring the area. Try the journey from the homes you visit, ask about access arrangements and picture your week here. A leisure facility becomes meaningful when it fits the way you actually want to spend your time.

Douar Laârab: a planned economic activity zone
The Marrakech–Safi Regional Development Programme for 2022–2027, in its final 2024 version, includes the creation of an economic activity zone at Douar Laârab in Essaouira. Its inclusion records a planned regional project. It is not evidence that the zone has been completed or opened.
This direction invites a view of Essaouira beyond holiday stays. If realised, the project could broaden opportunities for local activity. The businesses that eventually establish themselves and the uses that emerge will reveal its practical significance.

A desirable future preserves a sense of place
What do we really want from the development of a city we love? Easier journeys, opportunities to work, welcoming places to enjoy together. We also want to recognise the qualities that first drew us there. In Essaouira, your own plans can bring these things together: a wider horizon and a daily life you want to cherish.
Picture your days: returning to a familiar street, welcoming friends, taking time over lunch, going out without planning every detail. A place’s appeal is also found in these quieter moments. Spend time discovering different neighbourhoods and their atmosphere, looking for somewhere your life could find its own natural rhythm.
Choose an address you can enjoy today
Development prospects add another dimension to a property search. Your decision is still best grounded in how you will use the home and the access available today. Could you enjoy this house if an announced project took longer? Would the journeys you make most often suit you in current conditions? These questions give your wish for a home a practical foundation.
During viewings, put your priorities into practice: arriving with luggage, reaching useful shops, moving between rooms, noticing the light at the times you will be there. Walk around the area, try the journeys that matter and ask what can be checked about the property and its surroundings. A future project can inform your thinking; it cannot replace that experience.
Beautiful cities sometimes ask for patience. Choosing somewhere you already enjoy makes it easier to welcome change as it comes. The aim is to shape a project that suits your pace, your budget and the pleasure you will take in spending time here.
